Notification of Potential Industrial Action on Tuesday 5 July 2016
You may be aware that members of the NUT teachers’ union are intending to take industrial action on Tuesday 5 July 2016 in relation to their concerns over their pay and conditions of their service.
This means that some teachers will be taking industrial action on Tuesday 5 July 2016. The action (a one day strike) is not against the school itself but is part of national industrial action organised by the NUT.
There is no requirement for unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, as there is no obligation on members of unions to follow a strike call. However, in the interest of your son or daughter’s safety and welfare, I have requested that staff colleagues advise me whether they intend to take action. If we have a high number of staff taking action it could possibly lead to either partial or full closure of the school.
Neither the governing body nor the head is legally allowed to close the school ‘in sympathy’ with the strike; however, our main concern is the safety of our students. The decision to close the school is never taken lightly but in this instance, if staff elect to take lawful industrial action, we have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all of our students.
Therefore, this letter is being sent to give you an early warning that the governors and I will need to consider the action we will have to take. The outcome of this consideration may be communicated to you very late, given that colleagues are not obliged to notify me of their intentions for the day. I have requested staff convey their intentions to me by noon tomorrow, Wednesday 29 June.
We will continue to update you with news via the school’s website, Parentmail and by letter for those who have not signed up to our email system.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and continued support.
Please be prepared that in the worst case scenario, the school will be closed to students on Tuesday 5 July 2016.
