Text and Email Communication with Parents

We are currently testing new software to enable us to communicate with parents using email and text messaging.  The benefits of this were highlighted during the winter when snow forced us to close but we were not able to pass this information directly to parents as quickly as possible.  Such a system will also enable us communicate via email and help us to reduce our use of paper.

The first part of this trial requires us to collect email addresses and text numbers from parents.  This started on Thursday 13th May 2010 with a brief text to parents for whom we do not hold an email address, asking them to reply with a suitable email address.  Over 300 parents have already replied to that text and we are updating our records with the information provided.  We would encourage all parents who received the text to reply including those who do not have an email address so that our records are up to date.

We will be testing the email system in a similar way over the next few weeks.

We will continue to ensure that parents without access to email or text messaging will receive letters in the usual way and our website will continue to be used as an important source of information.

Hounsdown School Dress Code and Uniform Shop Update

Following a review of our uniform shop at Hounsdown, we have decided to stop selling uniform directly to pupils from school with immediate effect.

We have been working closely with our uniform suppliers, Skoolkit, to ensure that uniform continues to be easily accessible. A significant benefit to parents will be the ability to use alternative payment methods that we have been unable to provide at Hounsdown.

For more information on how to purchase school uniform and the Hounsdown School Uniform Dress Code please click on the relevant link below.

Green Flag Award

In July Hounsdown School was awarded its Green Flag through the Eco Schools Programme. At the end of last term two assessors visited Hounsdown School and spent the afternoon with the Lead Team finding out about the projects that we have carried out. The assessors were particularly impressed with how a wide range of the school community is involved with the projects. We are only the third Secondary School in Hampshire to have achieved this award.

The Green Flag is an internationally recognised award. It is given for:

Outstanding achievement in sustainable development education and management, continuously improving the environmental performance of the school and the wider community.

Renewable Energy @ Hounsdown

Hounsdown school has recently had installed some PV solar panels to generate electricity for the school. Pupils can see how much electricity we are generating by a display unit in reception.

As we work towards making Hounsdown more sustainable we would like to add some other renewable energy technologies to the site. Possibilities include geothermal heating, biomass generator, solar water heaters or a small scale wind turbine. We would love to know your views on what we are trying to do. Please write to the school or email Ms Cook.
