The mathematics department, has thirteen subject teachers, each having their unique perspective on the teaching of mathematics but having a shared determination to ensure that each student achieves their absolute best in this subject.
The department occupies the top floor and another classroom on the first floor of the East Block and comprises eight purpose built, bright and airy classrooms. Interactive white boards, computers and internet access are available in most rooms and the latest textbooks and other resources are used to ensure the progress of students.
Students in years 7 and 8 take a two year, (key stage 3), course, designed to consolidate previous learning and prepare the students for further study at key stage 4.
In years 9, 10 and 11, a variety of courses are offered, largely dependent on the ability ranges of students. All students take a GCSE in mathematics following the Edexcel specification. This comprises two examinations, (one with a calculator and one without) and two pieces of coursework, (one based on algebra and the other on data handling).
Free Standing Maths Units, (AQA), (which prepare more able students for study at AS level), are offered to the top sets in year 10 and 11.
