Hounsdown School - A Science College

Information and Careers Guidance (IAG)

As a school, we provide Information and Career Guidance (IAG) for students in Years 7-11 through PSHCE lessons, theme days, information evenings and liaison with external providers.

This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Students at Hounsdown School are entitled to:

  • Find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point
  • Hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events
  • Understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses
  • Have a careers and guidance interview with an independent careers advisor
  • Explore and develop the softer skills that employers value in their employees.

Careers Library

The Careers Library is housed in the main school library, where students can find up to date local Sixth Form Prospectus, information on Job seeking and Apprenticeships. We also have a full range of University Prospectus and a variety of literature on various careers.

The Careers Noticeboard is outside the library which gives relevant information for Years 10 and 11 students. Tutor groups are kept up to date via emails and resources as and when appropriate.

We currently use an on-line database called Kudos - Students can get the licence code from the noticeboard and from all Year 11 Tutor rooms.
